As the first week of May nears, early childhood centers across the U.S. are gearing up to recognize a group of educators who often work behind the scenes—preschool teachers. From May 5–9, 2025, communities will celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, with Teacher Appreciation Day on May 6, focusing special attention on the professionals shaping our youngest learners.

Why Preschool Educators Deserve the Spotlight

Preschool educators face unique and often underappreciated challenges. Beyond managing playtime, they:

  • Guide developmental milestones

  • Nurture social and emotional skills

  • Implement research-based learning strategies

They work tirelessly, often with fewer resources and less recognition than their K–12 peers, yet their impact is equally profound.

Heartfelt Recognition: Affirmations and Connection

Meaningful appreciation starts with emotional acknowledgment:

  • Handmade notes or artwork from students

  • Teacher awards recognizing individual contributions

  • Appreciation videos from families and students

  • Kudo boards in break rooms or on digital platforms

  • Alumni testimonials and social media shoutouts

These affirmations remind educators that their work has lasting value, far beyond the classroom.

Tangible Appreciation: Gifts and Practical Support

Thoughtful, physical gestures enhance the celebration:

  • Family-hosted meals, coffee, or treats throughout the week

  • Restocked classroom supplies

  • Personalized gifts like custom mugs or apparel

  • Self-care gifts such as wellness bags, gift cards, or car washes

These offerings address real needs while showing educators they are seen and valued.

Shared Experiences: Activities That Build Community

Fun and engaging events bring a sense of celebration:

  • Themed events: sundae bars, coffee carts, food trucks

  • Relaxation stations: massage sessions, manicures

  • Interactive fun: scavenger hunts, talent shows, tie-dye parties

  • Creative schedules: dress-up days, dance breaks, tea time

These experiences create joyful memories and strengthen team spirit.

From One Week to Year-Round Appreciation

While Teacher Appreciation Week is a key moment, ongoing support is vital:

  • Regular check-ins with staff about satisfaction and well-being

  • Monthly treats or mini-celebrations

  • Mentorships and growth opportunities

  • Consistent positive feedback on their work

Shifting from occasional to sustained appreciation helps improve retention and morale in early childhood education settings.
